Art in Action

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls

The 3rd grade students at St. Paul Lutheran have hosted Empty Bowls dinners for 8 years in a row. Together, we have raised approximately $16,000 for our local food pantry with ticket sales and donations, along with thousands more for local families from our silent auctions. This is by far, my favorite project to work on with my students. Empty Bowls is a nationally recognized organization whose goal is to end hunger in our communities.

Twenty percent of purchases came right back to us. Families, students, and teachers can make comments on student artwork to encourage our artists.

I connected with a school from the Netherlands using Artsonia and participated in an Artist Trading Card exchange while at St. Paul.

Annual

Art Fair

Annual Art Fairs

Each year at St. Paul I have put my 5th grade students in charge of helping to plan and host our annual art fairs. I save the work of each student thoughout the year. In the spring each student chooses which project he/she feels the most proud of to enter into the art fair. The show is juried by an artist outside of the school. Awards are then presented in the art room during class time.

The Memory Project

The Memory Project

I have participated in The Memory Project two different times while at St. Paul. Students drew portraits of orphaned children from both Peru and Ghana that were then hand delivered by the organizations founder. This was an incredible experience for both my students and myself. Click HERE for the Artsonia gallery of portraits from 2015.

Monster Exchange: Second graders create a class monstser and write descriptive sentences about each added piece. We then exhange them with other classes in different schools locally or nationally. In 2015, a student suggested we put it on Facebook to see what we would get. HERE are our results!
HERE is another example of a Monster Exchange.

Professional Development Presentations: I have presented at the MAEA Conference twice, highlighting using technology and writing in Art. I have also presented at the Great Lakes Bay Region Lutheran Educator Conference at Valley Lutheran High School twice.
